By Aaron Humes: The National Hurricane Center has confirmed that Hurricane Erin has intensified to a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with maximum sustained winds now reaching miles per hour.
Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Erin’s minimum central pressure has plummeted to 917 millibars (27.08 inches).
At 11:20 AM AST (9:20 a.m. Belize time), the center of the hurricane was located approximately 105 miles north of Anguilla. Moving west at 17 miles per hour, Erin is expected to turn west-northwest later today, with a decrease in forward speed anticipated. The storm is projected to pass just north of the northern Leeward Islands, including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, over the weekend.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to prepare for severe weather conditions, as hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center, and tropical storm-force winds stretch as far as 140 miles primarily to the north of the storm.
