
By Zoila Palma: President of Guatemala Bernardo Arevalo hosted a press conference today to update the country on the ongoing operations during the State of Emergency.
Arevalo along with Minister of Home Affairs Marco Antonio Villeda and Minister of National Defense Henry Saenz reported that so far, police have detained more than 1,000 people for various crimes, seized 109 illegal firearms, and confiscated 799 motorcycles and 236 vehicles.
Guatemalan officials also highlighted major blows to drug trafficking cartels, including the seizure of more than 2 tons of suspected cocaine at Puerto Quetzal, Escuintla, the eradication of illegal crops, and the capture of the first individual subject to extradition for drug trafficking.
The Minister of National Defense said that joint work of the security forces continues to combat criminal organizations, strengthen controls within penitentiary centers, and eradicate coca leaf shrub plantations throughout the country.
