In the government’s ongoing efforts to market Nevis as a premium film destination, Premier Mark Brantley highlighted at his monthly press conference that an international romance feature film is currently being produced in Nevis, by Chuck and Bree West of OCTET Productions.
“I’m very proud to report that an international full-length romance feature film is currently in production on Nevis,” Premier Brantley stated. “This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts to position Nevis as a premier destination for film production in the region, offering both scenic beauty and professional local capacity.”
Local actors Winston Crook and Kayla Mallalieu have secured active speaking roles in the film, contributing to the authentic representation of our people and culture. Additionally, Tesean Wilkin, Jamal Jean-Jaques and Nyala Daniel are part of the local crew. The film aims to promote Nevis to the international community as a destination with future tourism potential by showcasing its hotels, villas, coastal and landscape scenery, as well as its local talent both on and off screen.
“Significantly, this project features the active participation of local talent, both on screen and behind the scenes,” Brantley said. “Local actors like Winston Crook and Kayla Mallalieu have secured speaking roles, contributing to the authentic representation of our culture and people. Additionally, the local crew includes Tesean Wilkin, Jamal Jean-Jacques, and Nayala Daniel. I believe Nayala is handling all the makeup and all of that.”
Brantley emphasised the importance of Nevisians being involved in every aspect of production, noting the growing skills and contributions of the island’s youth. “Demonstrating the growing skills and involvement of Nevisians in the creative industries, the film prominently showcases various locations across Nevis, including our hotels, villas, natural landscapes, and coastal scenery, providing valuable international exposure and future tourism potential.”
He also referenced the recent filming of The Real Housewives of Potomac on the island, underscoring Nevis’ growing appeal to international producers. “So I want to just pause there, members of the press. I really do think that’s headline-worthy, because we just completed the filming for an important television series—The Real Housewives of Potomac. And here we are now, engaged in a full-length movie feature that is being filmed. And the beautiful thing here, as has been indicated, is that we have Nevisians on screen, and we have Nevisians behind the scenes.”
Encouraging youth to seize opportunities in the creative sector, Brantley added, “And I want to encourage our young people out there who are interested in film, who are interested in the creative industry. In Nevis, we’re not just talking about it, we’re actually delivering. And when I see youngsters like Nayala, who can take their talent for makeup, hair, and all that, and put it now into film. When I see Tesean Wilkin, who started with MSR Media, Jamal Jean-Jacques, and these youngsters who are skilled with cameras, editing, and lighting, there are so many skill sets. I want to continue to encourage our people to get involved. A lot is happening here on the island of Nevis, and I’m quite proud that our film commission, recently officially launched, has had these early successes.”
The Premier also celebrated Nevis’ cultural presence at CARIFESTA 15 in Barbados, where the documentary Stone and Spirit, which explores Nevisian church history, was selected for screening. “So here again, we have a film produced in Nevis that featured the churches of Nevis. Stone and Spirit was selected as a feature film at CARIFESTA in Barbados.”
