The Cayman Islands Watercraft Association began its 2025 National Tour over the weekend with their round one event – Flat Out.
The tour got under way near the South Sound dock on Sunday, 30 March, with new challengers and veterans facing off in a nail-biting competition.
The association, celebrating its 15-year anniversary, noted that the tour is shaping up to be its biggest tournament to date.
Several up-and-comers made their marks during the first competition, including Andre Massias, who won the novice class.
“I just went out there and did the best I could do, I guess, and held my ground for the most part, and went away with the win,” Massias told the Compass.
The pro-open was won by Aaron Miller, and Johnathon Ebanks took the amateur class. The naturally-aspirated lite class saw James Munroe Jr. finish as the winner, and in the naturally-aspirated open, Alwin Buttrum Jr. took the win.
Mid-race collision
In an unfortunate incident during the event, two riders collided mid-race.
Cayman Islands Watercraft Association issued a statement on the matter, saying that only one of the riders “sustained minor injuries” in the crash.
“Thanks to the swift response of our dedicated safety team, including the Cayman Islands Fire Service, Cayman Islands Coast Guard, EMS, and our CIWA marshals, the situation was handled quickly and efficiently,” the association said.
Waverunner enthusiasts will have more opportunities to catch the action later this year, with rounds scheduled to take place in May, June and July, before capping off with the finale in August.
