By Breaking Belize News Staff: The murder trial of George Hyde, 26, and Devaun Garcia, 23, accused in the 2021 killing of 18-year-old Eaton Thompson, opened yesterday in the High Court of Justice Candace Nanton—but proceedings were stalled due to the absence of the prosecution’s main witness.
Thompson, a student from Mahogany Heights, was fatally shot on November 1, 2021, while reportedly out buying $2.00 tacos for his mother. Now, more than three years later, Hyde and Garcia stand trial for his murder.

However, the prosecution hit a roadblock as their key male witness, despite being subpoenaed, has yet to be located. The court heard that efforts to detain him have so far been unsuccessful.
In the witness’s absence, the Crown managed to have five to six agreed statements entered into evidence, but was ultimately forced to seek an adjournment until tomorrow, April 16, in hopes that police will locate the witness by then.
Justice Candace Nanton is presiding over the case. Hyde is being represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar, while Garcia—who was just 16 years old at the time of the murder—is represented by Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson.
According to the prosecution, the missing witness is crucial to proving the murder charges against the two men. Both accused have been further remanded to the High Court as the trial continues.
