Following the successful hosting of the 2025 Kids Athletics Festival, Team Athletics SVG will ensure that young athletes between the ages of 4 and 14 years from the Southern Grenadines, will get a taste of the action.
Making this known was national coordinator of the Kids Athletics Programme, Kelisha Ashton-Yorke, at the conclusion of the festival, last Saturday, May 10, at the Diamond Track Facility.
The Festival hosted 25 teams from primary and secondary schools, clubs and community, a total of five hundred participants. Ashton Yorke, disclosed of their intent.
“Noticeably, we have expanded the programme to the community which in itself shows growth,” Ashton-Yorke said declaring their intentions
“ We will also be hosting one in the Southern Grenadines as the second leg, as we believe that every child is born to move, thus we should let them go, grow and glow in sports.”
Saturday’s action-packed festival formed part of an international undertaking as St Vincent and the Grenadines plays its part in the Relay Around the World Challenge, in celebration of Kids’ Athletics Day 2025. Kids’ Athletics Day is celebrated each year on May 7.
In keeping with the fundamentals of Run, Jump and Throw, the activities of the Kids’ Athletics Festival included the Treasure Chest; Clean the Yard; Hop, Step, Jump; Rhythmic Jump; Hurdles Sprint; Javelin Throw; Cross Hop; Sack Race; Bean Bag; Formula One; along with a Shuttle Relay involving all participants.
Ashton- Yorke reiterated that the Kids’ Athletics Day is seen as the cornerstone of World Athletics’ Kids’ Athletics Programme that, “utilizes the power of athletics to inspire children and young people wherever they are, to be more active, develop their skills and confidence, and connect with sport for life”.
The Kids’ Athletics Programme was launched in 2002 and has been implemented by more than 150 Member Federations.
