By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man alleges he fell victim to a scam while attempting to purchase an iPhone 13 Pro Max from a social media marketplace.
According to police, the victim found a post on Facebook advertising the phone for $1,000 Belize dollars. According to Garbutt, he communicated with a user named Scarelet Junior via the Messenger app and agreed to the purchase. The seller provided banking details for an Atlantic Bank account under a different name, prompting the victim to seek assistance from his girlfriend for the transaction.

She completed the transfer of the funds with a screenshot of the transaction, which he then forwarded to the seller. However, when the time came for Scarelet Junior to deliver the phone, communication took an alarming turn. On March 7, Scarelet informed Garbutt that he was unable to ship the item through Belize Package and Mailing Service (BPMS) and subsequently began to offer a series of excuses.
As of the time of the police report, he has not received the iPhone he paid for, nor has he received a refund for his $1,000. Police are now investigating and have sought assistance from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
