Man Utd’s horror season going from bad to worse after Wolves defeat… but stats reveal it could yet be a good omen

MANCHESTER UNITED’S defeat to Wolves earlier today was their 15th of what’s been a miserable Premier League campaign.

Ruben Amorim’s rotated side were beaten 1-0 thanks to Pablo Sarabia’s 77th minute free kick.

Wolves’ win saw them draw level on points with 14th-placed Man Utd, who are just two above West Ham in 17th.

The Red Devils have now lost 15 league games in a season for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

In that year, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side came 13th in the First Division.

There were repeated calls for Ferguson to be sacked by United chiefs that season.

But, in what could be a positive omen for United supporters, it ended in a cup final victory.

The Red Devils won the 1990 FA Cup, Bryan Robson hoisting the trophy following a 1-0 final replay victory over Crystal Palace.

Current United boss Amorim will hope that he can salvage this season in a similar manner by winning the Europa League.

In January 1990, Mark Robins’ FA Cup third round winner at Nottingham Forest was subsequently hailed as having “saved” Ferguson’s job.

While there’s no suggestion that Amorim has been under any immediate pressure, Thursday night’s heroics against Lyon helped salvage United’s season.

The Red Devils trailed 4-2 in extra time to the ten men of the Ligue 1 side at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes’ 114th minute penalty gave United hope, before Kobbie Mainoo levelled the tie with a brilliant 120th minute equaliser.

In one of Old Trafford’s most remarkable moments in years, Harry Maguire then won it for Amorim’s men barely 60 seconds later, sparking delirium in the stands and on the bench.

Man Utd will face Athletic Bilbao, who host next month’s final, in the Europa League semi-finals.

Should they overcome the Basque side, they would meet either Tottenham Hotspur or Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt in the final.

Asked for any positives following today’s defeat to Wolves, Amorim refused to sugarcoat his side’s situation.

The Portuguese, 40, said: “We say to the fans the truth, that we lack a lot of things in our team, that we miss chances.

“If we don’t score goals, we are not going to win. And we have a lot to do and focus on improving the team, step by step, and understanding that, until the end of the league [season], it’s going to be like this.

“And then we need to do something.”
