On March 28, 2025, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 rocked Southeast Asia.
The center of the quake was near Mandalay, Myanmar. The shaking was felt in many nearby areas and caused serious damage and deaths in both Myanmar and Thailand.
In Bangkok, Thailand—about 600 miles from the epicenter—a high-rise building that was still being built collapsed. Two people were confirmed dead, and many others were trapped under the rubble.
In Myanmar, the earthquake caused heavy damage. Old buildings, including monasteries and royal palaces, were badly affected.
A 90-year-old bridge in the Sagaing region fell down. Parts of the main road between Mandalay and Yangon were also damaged. This made rescue efforts harder. The Myanmar government declared a state of emergency in six regions and asked for blood donations to help the injured.
In Thailand, the quake caused fear and confusion. The building collapse in Bangkok led to panic. Emergency teams confirmed at least two people died, and several more were still trapped. The rescue work was difficult because the area around the collapsed building was unsafe.
People in Bangkok described the terrifying moments. Some saw swimming pools shaking and water spilling out. Others ran out of buildings in shopping malls as the floors moved beneath them.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, declared Bangkok an emergency zone. People were told to leave tall buildings in case more quakes followed. The Defense Minister said three people had died and about 90 were missing due to the collapse. Rescue and aid teams were working hard to help survivors.
Countries around the world showed support. Pope Francis prayed for the people affected in Myanmar and Thailand. The disaster reminded everyone how dangerous earthquakes can be in this part of the world. It also showed why it is important to be ready and have strong plans for disasters like this.
