Former Premier Division champions, Greenbay Hoppers, opened their First Division campaign with a narrow 3-2 loss to FC Master Ballers when they met at the Keithley Sheppard Recreation Park on Thursday.
With a roster featuring veterans Tamorley “Ziggy” Thomas, Keith Kelly and Steveroy “Deman” Anthony in goal, Hoppers fell behind in as early as the 12th minute when Clive Sansculotte put the visitors ahead from close range.
Hoppers, demoted at the end of the 2024/25 domestic season, found their first in minute 21 via a strike from Da Paul O George before Master Ballers regained the advantage just six minutes later via striker Shumba Thomas.
Hoppers struck in the 52nd minute to restore hope via Hakeem Smith but could not hold on for the point as just seven minutes later, Robert Jeffery scored the winner for Master Ballers.
There was victory as well for former three-peat Premier Division champions English Harbour as they also won 3-2 over the recently demoted Willikies FC at Willikies.
Former national striker Clarance Marsh lead with a brace for English Harbour, scoring in minutes 17 and 35 to put the visitors two-nil up. Zahdeir Forde pulled a goal back for Willikies in the 67th minute. Delroy Simpson restored English Harbour’s two-goal cushion with a strike in minute 78 while a late strike by Forde gave hope to the home fans. Willikies however, could not find a third strike that would have allowed them to take a point from the contest.
In the other game contest, Freeman’s Village Scorpions and Bolans FC played to a 2-2 draw when they met at Freemans Village.
The visitors went ahead in the 25th via an Obediah Browne conversion but former national player, Roy Gregory, brought the home team on level teams in the 40th. Dow Southwell put Bolans back on course for three points with a 55th minute strike but Junior Lee secured a point for the home team with a late 89th minute conversion.
