Baní, D.R.- The mayor of the Monserrat Municipal District in Bahoruco province, Edgar Juan Aníbal Ramírez Reyes—also known as Edgar Jhon Martínez Reyes—was arrested in flagrante delicto for his alleged role in a network involved in human trafficking and the illegal manipulation of official civil documents.
The arrest occurred in Baní after a police chase that began in Santo Domingo. Authorities intercepted the mayor while he was driving a municipal government vehicle and found official books from the Neyba Civil Registry Office in his possession. These records had allegedly been stolen and were being used to falsify birth certificates.
According to initial investigations, the altered documents were designed to fabricate ties with deceased individuals, enabling false claims to inheritances and facilitating identity fraud—key components of a broader human trafficking operation.
The case has now been handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Central Electoral Board is continuing to investigate the extent of the damage caused by the suspected criminal network’s access to the national civil registry system.
