As the 2025 Atlantic Season approaches, Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Gretta Roberts, has urged Dominicans to partner with the various councils to offer their support.
Her comments came during her address for the official start of Local Government Month 2025.
The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 and will end on November 30.
One of the earliest hurricane forecasts for this year, from Colorado State University, predicts 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes. Although these numbers are lower than those observed in 2024, they still indicate an above-average hurricane season. Historically, from 1990 to 2020, the average hurricane season has produced about 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
“As we approach the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season I urge all citizens to partner with the councils and offer their support,” she stated. “The very essence of local government in Dominica is rooted in the spirit of Koudmen, community cooperation, generosity and service.”
Roberts added, “Whether by clearing a drain, assisting a neighbour or helping in emergency response efforts, every contribution matters.”
She said the Ministry of Community Development remains focused on ensuring that councils evolve to meet the change in realities of every community.
Meanwhile, Roberts revealed that the long-discussed local government reform is advancing, adding that a steering community will convene during local government month to review the final draft and make recommendations for submission to cabinet and ultimately to parliament.
