By Horace Palacio: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH) is sounding the alarm after individuals were caught on video digging into the shoulder of the newly constructed Chan Pine Ridge Road, raising concerns about the long-term integrity of the road and safety for the community.
A video shared by the Ministry on social media shows a group of men using shovels and a wheelbarrow to remove material from the road shoulder while a pickup truck is parked nearby. The footage, believed to be filmed by a bystander, has since gone viral, drawing public outrage.

“This is what we’re now dealing with,” the Ministry stated in the caption. “This crew is helping themselves to the shoulder of the road, without a care in the world. This will undermine the integrity of the newly built road, and create serious problems for the community. Please stop. This makes no sense. Please stop.”
The Chan Pine Ridge Road was recently rehabilitated as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades in northern Belize. Tampering with its structure, especially the road shoulder, could lead to erosion, drainage issues, and increased maintenance costs.
As of Sunday morning, the Ministry had not indicated whether police had been called in to intervene. No identities have been released, and it remains unclear whether the individuals involved will face legal consequences.
