NDP says people need to return home

Parliamentary Representative for the Southern Grenadines, Terrance Ollivierre, has complained that one year after the passage of Hurricane Beryl, many people from his constituency have still not received help so they can return home.

“…as a matter of fact, some of them said to me, they went to several consultations, and still, after checking in regards to the housing, they were told that their names are not on the list- any list, in order to get the house repaired,” Ollivierre said in the House of Assembly on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

He said some people in temporary housing provided by the government are expressing the desire to return home as they have no way of making a living on the mainland.

“People need to get back to a decent way of life,” Ollivierre insisted, while pointing out that they need help to be able to do so. Following passage of the hurricane on July 1, 2024, a majority of the population especially on Union Island accepted the government’s offer to be relocated to mainland St Vincent as the Southern Grenadines was left in shambles by Hurricane Beryl’s fury.
