The Association of Dominicans in the Northeast, USA (ADNExUS) has announced the inaugural 2025 Bel Matador Competition, which will include a new “Gros” category for women aged 45 and older, in addition to the ongoing “Petit” youth category.
A press release from the organization shared that the revised competition is scheduled for September 27, 2025, at the Italian American Club in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. According to the group, this represents its aims to honor Dominican culture and heritage across different age groups.
Founded in 2014, ADNExUS seeks to facilitate assistance for Dominican scholars and entrepreneurs, by connecting diverse civic groups and individuals committed to the development and celebration of Dominican culture through exceptional events. “By introducing the Gros category, we are acknowledging the profound contributions that our mature women make to preserving and passing down Dominican traditions,” remarked Sylma Brown, the president of ADNExUS. “These women are the backbone of our community, and it’s high time we created a platform to celebrate their grace, wisdom and cultural knowledge.”
The Bel Matador Competition will consist of two distinct categories:
– Gros: Women aged 45 and older
– Petit: Youth aged 14 to 19
All participants must be of Dominican descent and show a sincere commitment to supporting ADNExUS’s fundraising and community initiatives, shared the release. Contestants are also required to obtain their own sponsors for the competition.
“Events like the Bel Matador competition serve as crucial cultural bridges, connecting Dominicans across the Northeastern United States and strengthening our sense of shared identity,” Brown added. “By bringing together different generations, we ensure our rich heritage continues to thrive far from our island roots.”
Applications are open until 16 May 2025. Interested participants should send their applications to [email protected].
