Eight teams are set to compete in the third annual Parham Super League scheduled to kick off on Saturday with a double-header at the Parham playing field.
Home team Parham will face neighbours Freeman’s Village Scorpions at 6:30 pm while Garden Stars FC face Pigotts FC at 8:00 pm.
One member of the league’s organising team, Jeremiah “Fatty” Harriett, said one change to this year’s instalment is that matches will only be contested on the weekends as weekday match-ups have proven difficult in the past.
“We tried doing it [playing matches] in the week last season but because of work commitments and so forth, it kind of created a little delay into the start of the games and that is something we are trying to run from. We want to approach it on a professional level where teams arrive on time, etcetera,” he said.
The other teams competing in the league are Potters, East Furlong, Willikies FC and Swetes FC.
Harriett said they have made preparations to ensure proper lighting during all matches and have consulted with professional, Trevor “Guzum” Watkins.
“Guzum [Watkins] and the guys should be putting in an additional two lights so we should be all set. The field is lit so we have lighting but we should be getting additional lighting because it’s mostly night matches. We don’t want to be bringing in teams and have dark spots here and dark spots there so we want to try and avoid a lot of the complaints from the teams,” he said.
The Parham defender said the focus of the league remains on providing teams with preparations heading into the football association’s season.
“Originally, when we started this league, it was to prepare teams for the upcoming season so it was basically to give teams a taste of what they would see in the Premier Division or some of the teams they would meet in Premier and also for them to discover perspective talents that they can integrate within their programmes going forward,” Harriett said.
On Sunday, Potters take on East Furlong at 5:00 pm while Willikies play Swetes at 6:30 pm.
