– The Faces of Development Summer Camp marked its fourth consecutive year with a dynamic and purpose-driven agenda centered around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). This year’s program was held under the theme “Developing a Sustainable Food Security System in Your Community.”
As part of the two-week camp, organizers hosted a health fair on Thursday, August 7, 2025 in collaboration with the Dennery Hospital. The event took place at the Clendon Mason Memorial Secondary School and brought together a number of health professionals offering services aimed at educating and empowering the local community particularly children, their families and other residents of Dennery.
This year’s Health Fair served as a key highlight of the camp’s activities, offering free health screenings, wellness checks, nutritional advice and set of educational booths providing information on the importance of food security, hygiene and disease prevention.
Principal Nursing Officer at the Dennery Hospital Yolanda Alcindor shared the wide range of health services and educational support offered during the Health Fair, all aimed at promoting health and wellness within the community. “At this health fair we have a number of services being offered. We have environmental health talking about mosquitoes, how to prevent dengue fever, how we can cover our water containers to prevent the mosquito breeding. We have substance abuse talking about alcohol and other dangerous drugs and we also have Universal Health Care talking about the different services that this program provides. Also, we have the Bureau of Health Education talking about general health education and we’re also offering screening and we also have the support of the Taiwan Technical Mission with a focus on Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and we have the Saint Lucia Fire Service looking at CPR for the participants.”
President for Faces of Development, Cornelius Edmund emphasized the importance of engaging young participants in these activities and equipping them with vital health knowledge. “For the last two years, we have been able to tie down that health fair on the same day, where not only the community is invited, but the community has been slow to respond sometimes but we are able to get the children to go through the various stations and learn about their health, those 15 years and older are tested and so on, but also yesterday we had another Nursing Practitioner come in to tell them about Sexual and Reproductive Health which we find is very important; the need for them to get that information as early as possible.”
The Health Fair not only supported the camp’s theme but also reinforced the importance of community health education and early prevention empowering families with the tools to live healthier lives.
