By Aaron Humes: The double murder of Luke “Lukie” Jones and his mother, Evadnie Jones rocked Belize City residents usually inured to violence today.
Senator and former area representative for Collet division Patrick Faber was first among those expressing his sorrow over the loss via social media. “I’ve known Lukie for practically 25 years,” Faber said. “He was not the kind of differently abled person who would sit still and wait for others to take care of him. Lukie was a true hustler — he used his voice, his spirit, and the little physical ability he had to make an honest living.”
Jones worked hard to support his mother and younger siblings and was a long-time employee of the Belize City Council, where his positive energy and work ethic left a lasting impact.
Faber, who recalled seeing Lukie during the recent general election campaign, highlighted the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths, which underscore the issue of gang violence plaguing the Collet area. “This tragic loss highlights the crazy gang warfare happening right in the heart of our Collet division,” he said. “We must all come together to address this violence before more innocent lives are lost.”
Faber extended his condolences to the family and loved ones of Lukie and Ms. Jones, saying, “May his soul, and that of his dear mother, rest in peace.”
Police investigations into the deaths continue.
