On Friday afternoon, police confirmed in a press release the identity of the person shot and killed on Monday in West Bay.
The victim was Al Martino Bush, 49, of West Bay. Bush was known in the community as ‘Joe’.
Police were dispatched late Monday morning after receiving a report of a shooting incident at an address on Watercourse Road in West Bay. Bush was found unresponsive at the location and was subsequently pronounced dead.
Police arrested two West Bay men, ages 38 and 45, on suspicion of murder on Monday. They have since been bailed pending further investigations.
Police have been in communication with the family of the deceased and they have been updated on the progress of the investigation so far.
“The RCIPS would like to extend our sincerest condolences to them in this tragic time,” the press release stated.
“The RCIPS is aware of the impact that this incident has had on the community, and measures have been implemented to safeguard and provide community reassurance.”
Those measures include increased patrols in targeted areas, especially throughout the district of West Bay, and increased presence and visibility of armed officers within the communities, including conducting foot patrols in key areas.
The police have activated its Major Incident Room and a major crime team has been established.
“We are appealing to the family, friends and associates of Mr. Bush to allow the police to conduct our investigation and bring the perpetrator(s) to justice in the right way,” said Detective Superintendent Peter Lansdown in the press release.
“The safety of the community is paramount and requires your cooperation. Our detectives have an 85% detection rate for murder investigations in the Cayman Islands, and we are pursuing this investigation with the same level of diligence.”
Detectives are seeking witnesses and are encouraging anyone who had contact with or saw Bush between Saturday, 21 June and Monday, 23 June to call the Major Incident Room at 649-2930.
