The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) is sending a strong appeal to persons who are in possession of unlicensed firearms to surrender them to the police.
This was according to Acting Commissioner of Police Lincoln Corbette who was delivering remarks at a press conference held at the police headquarters on Thursday.
“I appeal and encourage all those with firearms without a license to surrender these firearms to the police,” Corbette said.
He also presented statistics where firearms were used for the commissioning of crimes between the period of 2020 to 2025.
Corbette reported that in 2020, 7 homicides were committed using firearms, however in 2021, “we had zero homicides by the use of firearms and 6 shootings with intent.”
“In 2022, 12 homicides by use of firearms, 3 attempted murders, and 21 shootings with intent,” he stated.
He further noted that in 2023, 10 homicides were recorded, one attempted murder, and 15 shooting with intent.
“In 2024, 7 homicides, 1 attempted murder, and 23 shootings with intent,” he noted. “For the year 2025…3 homicides by use of firearms, 2 attempted murders, and 6 shooting with intent.”
Corbette said police will continue to take all necessary legal means at their disposal to ensure that these perpetrators are hunted down and brought to justice.
“This nonsense has to stop,” Corbette stressed.
