By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Pope Francis’ funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 am (2:00 am Belize time) in St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican announced.
Pope Francis’ body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican beginning Wednesday, allowing the faithful to pay their respects before his funeral Mass.
Vatican News said on Tuesday that Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the Mass, which will be concelebrated by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from around the world.
Following the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, Novemdiales will commence—nine days of traditional mourning, including prayers and Masses dedicated to the repose of Pope Francis’ soul.
Following the funeral, the late Pope will be entombed at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
Before the funeral events begin, Vatican News said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, will oversee the rite of translation on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 9:00 am (1:00 am Belize) with a moment of prayer. Pope Francis’ coffin will be carried from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica, passing through Santa Marta Square and the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs.
