By Aaron Humes: The residents of Placencia Village, Stann Creek District, are at a crossroads as they continue to advocate for the return of Placencia Point, a beloved stretch of coastline that holds immense cultural significance for the community. Earlier this month, a rally highlighted their concerns over private ownership of the land, which is not only a cherished beach but also the iconic venue for the annual Lobster Fest.
Minister of Natural Resources, Cordel Hyde, has acknowledged the community’s plight, revealing that negotiations are ongoing with the current landowners. “Placencia Point has been in private hands since the 1870s, changing owners most recently in 2022,” Hyde stated to reporters today. The new owners have ambitious plans, but the village council is appealing for the land to be acquired for public use.

Hyde further reported that negotiations have faced difficulties, with the owners valuing the land at $4.5 million while the government’s assessment pegs it at around $1.3 million. However, he remains hopeful about reaching an agreement that would allow the community to host this year’s Lobster Fest on the property.
