By Aaron Humes: A retiree from Ladyville, Belize District, has reported a theft of over $12,000 worth of jewelry at her home, sparking an investigation by the Ladyville police. The resident of Mile 10 1/2 Phillip Goldson Highway told police that two valuable pieces of jewelry went missing just days before she was scheduled to leave for a vacation.
According to the police report filed on July 14, the complainant discovered the absence of her yellow and white gold bracelet, valued at US$2,000, while preparing for her trip on June 18. She noted that she had placed the bracelet in her nightstand drawer alongside another piece, a white gold amethyst and sapphire bracelet, worth US$4,500. When she went to retrieve her belongings, she found both items missing.
The retiree conducted a thorough search of her home, including the nightstand and surrounding areas, but was unable to locate the missing jewelry. She told police that an employee, her cleaning lady, had been caught stealing food items from her pantry. This employee is the only person with access to the bedroom, as the door remains locked outside of cleaning visits, however, she has not been to the residence since June 19 when she last reported for work.
Police are investigating.
