Two local farmers from the Virgin Islands are releasing new books next week that focus on farming and culture.
The first book, Johnny the Great Rooster, is an educational story about the important job that roosters and chickens do. It shows how they help the soil, provide eggs and meat naturally, and keep farming traditions alive.
The second book, Arona’s First Garden Colouring Book, is made for children. It teaches them the basics of gardening—how to plant, take care of crops, and harvest. The goal is to help kids love nature and learn about sustainable living from a young age.
The authors, Jeffrey and Arona Forbes, say that Johnny helps readers understand how chickens are a key part of farming and cultural life.
Ms. Anne Lennard, the Deputy Director of Culture, praised the Forbeses for their deep knowledge of farming and culture. She said their books are more than just stories—they teach lessons about nature, pride, and traditions. She added, “The Forbeses are planting more than crops. They are also planting seeds of knowledge, pride, and sustainability.”
A public launch for the books will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m. at Transformation Church International in Road Town. There will be readings, signings, and a chance to meet the authors.
The Department of Culture supports projects like these to help preserve the Virgin Islands’ traditions and to pass them on to younger generations.
