United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is bow meeting Caribbean leaders in St Kitts and Nevis as part of the CARICOM Heads of Government summit, with discussions focusing on Cuba’s worsening crisis and a range of geopolitical and regional issues affecting US Caribbean relations.
Cuba’s ongoing fuel shortages and energy crisis—worsened by US restrictions on oil shipments—have led to widespread blackouts and humanitarian concerns, while the island continues recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa. Caribbean leaders are expected to raise concerns about the humanitarian impact and the broader implications for regional stability.
Migration and deportation policies are also on the agenda, with some Caribbean countries expressing concern about US demands to accept deportees and visa restrictions affecting regional nationals. Security cooperation is another major focus, including efforts to combat drug trafficking, illegal firearms, and organised crime across the Caribbean.
The talks are also expected to address US pressure on regional governments regarding ties with Cuba and China, economic cooperation, and the wider geopolitical situation following recent US military actions in Venezuela.
Rubio’s visit comes as CARICOM marks its 50th summit, with leaders seeking to strengthen diplomatic ties while protecting the region’s economic and political interests.
Rubio landed in early Wednesday morning at RLB International Airport
