The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said the US will keep enforcing its immigration laws. He assured that people who have green cards or legal visas and follow the rules have nothing to worry about.
Rubio said that about 15 million people have entered the US illegally in the past few years.
He explained that if Jamaica said anyone could enter freely, it would cause chaos. So, he said, every country needs immigration laws and must enforce them, which is what the US President is doing.
Rubio was speaking at a press conference after meeting with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, in St. Andrew on March 26.
He said Jamaica is not a major source of illegal immigration and probably doesn’t even rank in the top 20.
Rubio also gave a warning to those who break visa rules or act violently. He said that anyone who supports terrorism or takes part in violent acts while on a visa will be removed from the country.
He said, “If you came to study but then caused chaos on campus, we wouldn’t have let you in—and we’ll send you out if you do that after arriving.”
He also said gang members will be removed from the US.
But he made it clear that green card holders who follow the law have nothing to fear.
