By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Pedro Pirates, under the guidance of Ada Cordova—the first woman coach in Premier League of Belize (PLB) history—delivered a remarkable performance, stunning reigning champions and league leaders Port Layola with a 4-2 victory on Sunday, April 13, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. This historic win secured their place in the finals with a 5-3 aggregate, after entering the semifinals as the fourth seed.
Coach Cordova’s leadership has been pivotal in the Pirates’ campaign. Despite finishing fourth in the regular season, the Pirates rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Their journey to the semifinals included a series of intense matches, that displayed their resilience and determination.
In the first-leg semifinal, the Pirates battled to a 1-1 draw with Port Layola, setting the stage for their dramatic triumph in the second leg.
Port Layola started strong in the decisive match, with Andres Orozco scoring in the 24th minute and Michael Palacio adding another in the 33rd. However, the Pirates mounted an incredible comeback. Brian Chavez struck just before halftime, and the second half belonged to San Pedro. Keydenshaay Bowen equalized in the 47th minute, Jaheim Mena gave them the lead in the 62nd, and Bowen completed his brace in the 80th minute, sealing the win.
The Pirates now advance to face Verdes FC, who dominated Progresso FC with a 5-0 aggregate win in their semifinal. As San Pedro Pirates make history on and off the field, all eyes are on their upcoming clash against Verdes, where they aim to continue their inspiring journey under Coach Cordova’s trailblazing leadership.
