By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old man from Sandhill Village is on remand at the Belize Central Prison following allegations that he burglarized his mother’s home and caused significant damage to household items.
The accused, Datrel Isaias Coba, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 to answer to a charge of burglary. However, proceedings were paused after Coba displayed concerning behavior during his arraignment. The magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental state before proceeding with a formal plea.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, April 13, 2025. According to police, around 1:00 p.m., Maria Esther Coba, 43, left her home at Mile 17 1/2 on the Philip Goldson Highway to attend church in Maskall Village. Upon returning around 6:40 p.m., she heard noises inside her home and, through a louvered window, saw her son inside without her permission. She immediately contacted police, who found Coba inside the house.
The accused allegedly broke into the home and damaged various items including plates, cups, pots, pans, a wooden table, a blender, and groceries—causing an estimated $730 in damages.
Initially, Coba pleaded guilty to the burglary charge but then told the court that during the break-in, he began hearing his father’s voice, which led him to break the dishes. The statement raised concerns about his mental health, prompting the court to order an evaluation before accepting a plea.
The prosecution objected to bail, citing the prevalence of burglary and the inconsistency between Coba’s account and the police’s version of events. They also raised concerns that he may interfere with the complainant—his own mother—if released.
Coba has been remanded to prison until June 2, 2025, pending the results of his psychiatric assessment.
