A 39-year-old man from Seatons will spend just about three and a-half years in prison after he was convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel.
Jamall Prince appeared in the All Saints Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition on Monday, June 30 and pleaded guilty to both offences.
Magistrate Emanuel sentenced him to three years and five months on the gun charge, and he received a one-year prison sentence for possession of ammunition. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Officers were on mobile patrol duty in a marked vehicle in Seatons on their way to the home of Javorn Jackson, when they saw three men. Prince, who was among the trio, ran between two vehicles and stooped down after seeing the lawmen. He reportedly had a shiny object in his hands.
The police officers became suspicious and went after Prince and detained him. Officers searched him, but nothing illegal was found. However, the police decided to conduct a search of the area where he was standing — between the two cars — and a black and silver Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol was found underneath some bushes.
When questioned about the weapon Prince admitted that it belonged to him. He was arrested and taken to St John’s Police Station, where it was discovered that the serial number had been erased from the firearm, which had a magazine containing 14 bullets, one of which was loaded in the chamber.
Prince was later formally charged.
