Despite facing challenging weather conditions and persistent sargassum seaweed that temporarily closed some beaches, the Silversands National Learn to Swim Week proved to be another success this year.
Held from 22 to 26 April, the initiative brought life-saving skills to hundreds of Grenadians across 16 locations, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Over the course of the week, more than 600 swimmers of all ages received essential swimming instruction from a dedicated team of over 130 instructors. The programme is aimed at promoting water safety, building confidence, and fostering a lifelong love of swimming among participants from communities across the island.

“Despite the rain and some beach closures due to sargassum, the instructors and participants showed incredible resilience and enthusiasm,” said organiser Deb Eastwood. “The spirit of community and the shared goal of promoting safety in our waters truly shone through. At several locations, swimmers and instructors walked through the sargassum to reach cleaner waters on the other side. Now that is dedication!”
Silversands Hotel and Resorts was a major partner of this year’s effort, and Mark Scott, representing the hotel at the wrap-up on Saturday, gave a few words of gratitude. “Silversands Hotel and Resorts are proud to be a part of this wonderful initiative, and we appreciate all they do to foster an environment where everyone can learn to swim. We have partnered with them for years now and fully support the excellent work they do in the community. We pride ourselves in helping the Grenadian community as we can as part of our social corporate responsibility. We extend our congratulations to the dedicated team of Get Grenada Swimming for their hard work and volunteerism.”
Other organisations joined in making the week a success, and Eastwood recognised Acado, Ting, Budget Marine, SIFH, Spice Island Marine, Ting, and Waggy-T for their continued support.
The event, organised by Get Grenada Swimming and local partners, reflects a strong commitment to reducing water-related accidents and empowering Grenadians with vital aquatic skills. Many participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn or improve their swimming abilities in a supportive environment.
Looking ahead, everyone is encouraged to sign up for the next Learn to Swim Week, sponsored by the Sandals Foundation, scheduled for 7–11 July. “Learning to swim is an invaluable skill that can save lives and open up new recreational opportunities,” said Eastwood. “We invite everyone to join us for the next swim week, and to also come to our Saturday free lessons held at 10 locations throughout the island.”
