Six Dominican students have been awarded full scholarships to pursue higher education in China through the Chinese Government Scholarship program. The announcement was made by Chinese Ambassador to Dominica, Chu Maoming, during the Chinese Government Scholarship Award Ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy in Morne Daniel.
Ambassador Chu highlighted the significance of the scholarship program in strengthening people-to-people exchanges between Dominica and China.
“This year, another six students have been awarded the scholarships,” he stated. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2004, over 200 Dominican students have benefited from the initiative.
The selected students will study disciplines such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Civil Engineering, fields identified as essential to Dominica’s digital transformation and aligned with the Dominica National Digital Transformation Strategy (2022–2026).
Addressing the recipients, Ambassador Chu emphasized the transformative potential of studying in China.
“Studying in China serves as a key that unlocks doors of opportunity, allowing you to witness a broader world with your own eyes,” he said. “You will experience smart living at every turn, with seamless convenience… You will have access to world-class research facilities and learning platforms, gaining insights into how China has achieved rapid technological advancement within just decades.”
He also underscored the broader diplomatic significance of the occasion. “Today’s gathering stands as testament to the enduring China-Dominica friendship. We count on you to carry forward this legacy of partnership. Be a successor of natural wisdom.”
Dominica’s Minister of Education, Octavia Alfred, also addressed the students, urging them to embrace the opportunity with humility and purpose.
“So this is your moment, but it’s also your responsibility. Carry this honor with humility and determination,” she said. “Let it fuel your journey, pursue excellence not only for yourself but for your families and your community and your country.”
Minister Alfred encouraged the students to uphold the tradition of academic excellence among Dominican scholars abroad.
“Keep up a positive trend of academic excellence of Dominican students across the globe,” she added. “Never take for granted the gift afforded by the People’s Republic of China.”
She expressed gratitude to China for its continued support.
“They have been providing these opportunities for our students since 2004. You have to educate our students. That is part of helping to build Dominica,” Alfred said.
The scholarship recipients are expected to begin their studies in China later this year.
