South Side FC were made to play form behind to salvage a one-all draw with Newtown FC in their second match on tour of St. Kitts when they clashed at the team’s home venue on Saturday night in Basseterre.
The team, representing the St. Mary’s South Constituency, fell behind within the first 25 minutes of play but held their nerves to outplay the newly promoted premier division team in St, Kitts in the second half.
South Side FC found the equalizer with just five minutes of regulation play left when a Devlyn Williams header rocketed into the back of the net off a corner kick.
Organizer of the initiative and MP for the St. Mary’s South Constituency, Hon. Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, said he has been getting very positive feedback even from officials in St. Kitts.
“I spoke to the head coach for the women football team [in St. Kitts] and he was encouraging me also to do the same for the women and he was saying that St. Kitts also need to take a page out of my book where these kind of initiatives are concerned to give the youths exposure. So it’s the beginning of great things to come. The deputy prime minister also said to me this attraction that is being derived from this initiative is very positive and we just have to build on it because he’s the one that, you know, made all the preparation for me on the ground and so he’s excited,” he said.
The UPP politician is hoping to expand and improve on the initiative moving forward.
“I’ll continue to use this medium to elevate our youths in St. Mary’s South and by extension the country. So, this is our first trip, but it’s definitely not going to be the last. We’re gearing up towards next year, back to the drawing board as we speak. Starting to plan for next year because we want to make it bigger and even better and possibly turn it into a tournament where we can invite other neighbouring countries to bring a team over and invite other local teams down here on the ground to be a part of it,” Simon said.
In their opening clash two days prior, South Side FC recorded a confident 5-1 triumph over Police. South Side FC is a selection of players from teams within the St. Mary’s South Constituency. The aim of the initiative is to fostering camaraderie amongst players from rival teams in the area while also rewarding players and officials for their hard work through the season.
