St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre is poised to continue leading the country after his ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) retained its strong legislative majority in Monday’s general election.
Official results released shortly after 10 p.m. showed the SLP winning at least 13 of the island’s 17 seats in the House of Assembly—matching the party’s current majority, with two constituencies still to be declared. Pierre secured 57.1 percent of the popular vote, comfortably ahead of United Workers Party (UWP) leader Allen Chastanet, who received 37.3 percent.
Chastanet, who served as prime minister before Pierre, entered the election with the UWP holding just two seats. As of late Monday night, the party had gained one additional seat.
Election observers from the British High Commission described the process as well organised, reporting strong voter turnout and a calm atmosphere at polling stations across the island.
