The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence advises that officials have been in contact with Dominican students in Jamaica from Thursday, October 23rd, in light of the impending passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Students have reported that they are making the necessary preparations, are in safe housing and that those on campus remain safe and have adequate supplies.
The Ministry is in contact with members of the Students’ Association, and arrangements are underway to address the needs identified in the students’ assessment report. The Ministry is also in contact with the Dominican embassy in Cuba. We have been assured that the authorities in Cuba are taking every possible measure to safeguard students. A special protection protocol is in place for foreign students and is being implemented. Our students in Cuba have also begun their own preparations ahead of possible hurricane impacts.
The Government of Dominica will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain communication with our students and the relevant authorities to ensure their safety and well-being.
