Saint Lucians are turning out early across the country today as voters head to the polls to elect a new government. Polling stations opened at 6:00 a.m., and election officials report that the start of voting has been smooth, with steady lines forming in several constituencies.
The election will determine control of all 17 seats in the House of Assembly under the first-past-the-post system. The governing Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), led by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, is seeking a second term after securing 13 seats in the 2021 general election. The United Workers Party (UWP), led by former prime minister Allen Chastanet, is attempting to regain power, focusing its campaign on economic management, security, and public accountability.
A recent pre-election survey showed the SLP ahead, though analysts caution that several constituencies remain competitive and could influence the final outcome. Both major parties spent the final days of campaigning appealing to undecided voters and urging citizens to turn out in large numbers today.
An 11-member CARICOM Election Observation Mission is on the ground monitoring the process. The team, made up of representatives from across the region, will observe polling stations throughout the day and is expected to issue a preliminary report shortly after polls close. Their presence is part of ongoing efforts to support transparency and public confidence in electoral processes across the Caribbean.
So far, no major incidents have been reported, and polls are expected to close later this evening before counting begins. Election officials say turnout updates will be released throughout the day. Final results are expected later tonight or early Tuesday.
The 2025 general election is being closely watched across the Eastern Caribbean, amid rising regional economic pressures and shifting political dynamics.
