If you have ever driven past one of those strong, gleaming metal buildings that seem to stand a little prouder than the rest, even after the fiercest hurricane, you might just be looking at the work of Structural Systems Limited (SSL). Celebrating 50 years of bold vision, steel strength and people power, SSL has become a cornerstone of industrial development in Barbados and across the Caribbean.
Back in 1975, when the idea of a Barbadian company designing and building hurricane-resistant structures seemed ambitious at best, Dr Ralph ‘Bizzy’ Williams had a vision – and so did the father of Independence, the late Right Excellent Errol Barrow. He said, “We both saw a need for providing industrial developments and buildings for manufacturers, and we both knew it was important to have a local company that would be able to take it in the right direction.”
And what a direction it turned out to be. From its modest beginnings, SSL has become a household name in the world of metal buildings, known for combining rugged durability with custom craftsmanship tailored to the Caribbean’s unique challenges. Because of this, their reputation is one of quality and staying power. And as Williams aptly put it, “hurricanes may come and go, but SSL’s buildings remain standing – reliable, resistant and resilient”.
But what truly sets SSL apart is not just the steel but the people behind it. Williams explained that the philosophy about the strength of his employees runs deep and is captured beautifully in his book Working to Build a Stronger Nation. “Our product is steel, but our strength is our people, and it is a motto that echoes throughout the company culture. I believe in my people. They truly set us apart. You can’t run a custom design building company without employees who have your back, and I have their back the same way. Most of the employees are shareholders too, and while it is a unique business model, it is one of the ways to show how much I value their work.”
Another significant factor in SSL’s journey is that it is not just local but is proudly regional. The company was the first to export a building to Montserrat and has expanded with teams in St Lucia and Jamaica. The company has also scooped up awards like the US Metal Building Component Manufacturers Association’s Commercial Building of the Year, and multiple Exporter of the Year awards from the Barbados Industrial Development Corporation. Yet, after five decades of growth and accolades, Williams remains grounded. And though technically retired, you will still find him in the familiar uniform, just as he was in the early days. “Somehow, I am still always in the uniform. However, that is when I am most recognisable, and it shows the power behind the logo of the company and the reputation we have built over the years.”
When asked about the future, he insisted it is in good hands. “We have an excellent CEO at the helm of the team that is focused on efficiency and innovation. So the future looks bright and good, and I sleep well at night knowing that the legacy is safe.”
As for advice for aspiring business owners, Williams emphasised that “success is not just measured by balance sheets or business strategies but that it begins with your values. Building a business is a reflection of who you are as a leader. To truly become a businessman, you need character and integrity. Your actions must set the standard for your team, not just in how you manage the business but in how you build trust, foster respect, and lead by example. Aim to surround yourself with people who share your vision and can support your journey because no business can thrive on its own, and the principles you uphold will determine your long-term success.”
