US singer Chris Brown has been released on bail after being charged with an “unprovoked attack” in a London nightclub in 2023.
The Grammy-winning artist has not yet entered a plea but has been allowed to go ahead with his world tour starting next month, as part of his bail deal.
He was arrested in Salford last week and charged with grievous bodily harm. He is accused of hitting a music producer with a tequila bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair.
Brown, who is 36, did not attend the bail hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday. The judge said he must pay £5 million as a security fee. This fee acts as a guarantee he will come back to court. If he breaks any bail rules, he may lose the money.
Brown had been kept in custody since last Thursday and was first denied bail on Friday. On Wednesday, he was granted bail under strict conditions: £4 million had to be paid right away, and £1 million more within a week.
His tour will begin in Amsterdam on 8 June and includes concerts in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Glasgow in June and July.
The next court hearing is set for 20 June, between shows in Cardiff and London.
Judge Tony Baumgartner also said Brown must hand over his passport to the court when not on tour. He must also stay at an address known to the court, avoid the alleged victim, stay away from Tape nightclub, and not apply for new travel papers.
Brown will be in court next month alongside his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu (also known as HoodyBaby), a 38-year-old US performer.
