
Retired nurse Rosie Felix, Taxi Operator Paula Celestine, and former MP for Roseau North Daniel “Danny” Lugay were granted bail in the sum of $25,000 today after being charged following protest action against electoral reform legislation held on Victoria Street in Roseau on March 19.
They appeared before a magistrate court where the charge of unlawful assembly was read to them. This charge falls under the Public Order Act and carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
Several individuals have since been arrested following last week’s protest, the latest being Felix who was taken into police custody earlier today.
Chairman of the Electoral Reform Coalition (ERC), Johnson Boston, was arrested at his home in Jimmit last night.
Former MP for the Salisbury constituency Hector John was among those arrested last week and was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 on March 24.
Others arrested include Samuel Durand, JnoBaptiste Charles, Bernard Moreau, Imran Joseph, Siri Defoe, Clementina Mitchel, Sorhaindo Durand and Moses Prosper.
The protest last week escalated into a confrontation with police, resulting in the use of tear gas and rock bullets, injuring several participants.
DNO understands that more arrests are expected to be made in the days ahead.
