By Aaron Humes: Tracy Taegar Panton, Leader of the Opposition, expressed on social media her deep sorrow over the loss of a young life full of potential, that of 19-year-old Kevin de Paz of Caye Caulker.
In a statement on her social media, she emphasized that the victim, de Paz, who was stabbed to death during a confrontation with police officers, “…did not deserve to die. He did not deserve to die in the manner he did.” She further questioned whether violence was the only way to address confrontation and called for alternatives such as dialogue and non-violent interventions.

Panton also highlighted the need for enhanced training for law enforcement officers, reinforcing that police officers should embody the principles of peacekeeping and protective service at all times. She urged the Police High Command to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident: “The department has a duty of care and a responsibility to protect [the] lives of all citizens. It is a sacred oath taken as part of their call to duty. When we know better, we can do better. We know better. Let us get it together, Belize.”
Acknowledging the broader social challenges faced by Belizeans, Panton appealed for patience and kindness, encouraging citizens to show empathy for those struggling and to avoid resorting to violence as a first response.
In closing, she reminded Belizeans that “we are each our brother’s and our sister’s keeper” and called for collective efforts to foster unity, understanding, and peace across the nation.
