US President Donald Trump is in “excellent cognitive and physical health,” according to his White House doctor.
He had his first annual check-up of his second term at a hospital near Washington DC. The exam also confirmed he still has a scar on his right ear from a gunshot wound during an assassination attempt last July.
Captain Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, wrote that Trump has strong heart, lung, brain, and overall body function.
Trump, now 78, was the oldest president to take office in January—although Joe Biden was 82 when he left office.
Trump’s nearly five-hour medical exam took place on Friday at Walter Reed hospital in Maryland. He had blood work, heart tests, and ultrasound scans.
The memo said Trump’s “active lifestyle” helps keep him in good shape. He’s still “fully fit to carry out the duties” of president.
He took several neurological tests and scored a perfect 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which checks for signs of dementia. This test includes tasks like naming animals and remembering words.
The doctor noted minor sun damage and a few harmless skin growths. Trump takes medication for cholesterol (Rosuvastatin and Ezetimibe), aspirin to protect his heart, and a cream for a skin issue.
His heart exam showed no problems, and he has a history of well-controlled high cholesterol. Other health issues mentioned include a past COVID infection, rosacea (a skin condition), and a harmless colon polyp.
He now weighs 224 pounds (101 kg) and is 6 feet 2.5 inches tall. That puts him in the “overweight” range, not obese. In 2019, he weighed 243 pounds.
The memo said his joints and muscles move well. His health is also helped by his active life, including regular golf wins.
This is the first public health report since the shooting incident at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July, when a bullet grazed his ear. At the time, a former White House doctor said the injury was only skin-deep.
This time the report said that Trump had “scaring on the right ear from a gunshot wound”. Presumably this was written in error and intended to say “scarring”, a common medical term meaning that he had a scar mark from a healed wound, rather than ‘scaring’ which makes no sense in the context, although there is no doubt that the bullet gave Trump a scare.
In his first term, doctors said Trump was healthy but should lose weight and exercise more.
On the campaign trail, Trump often criticized Joe Biden’s health. After a poor debate performance last year, Biden refused to take a cognitive test and said he hadn’t taken one while in office.
