By Zoila Palma: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Kingston, Jamaica, on Wednesday as part of a Caribbean tour, where he discussed Cuban medical missions and the situation in Haiti with regional leaders, including Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Rubio defended the Trump administration’s opposition to Cuba’s medical program, which sends doctors to countries like Jamaica, AA reports.

He argued that the program violates labor standards, claiming that doctors are not paid directly and their passports are controlled by the Cuban government, essentially amounting to forced labor.
Prime Minister Holness countered, emphasizing the importance of Cuban doctors in addressing Jamaica’s healthcare worker shortage.
He insisted that the program complies with international labor laws and that the doctors are not exploited.
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing crisis in Haiti, pledging to work together on security and humanitarian efforts.
Rubio promised to review U.S. travel warnings for Jamaica, which currently advise Americans to “reconsider” travel due to high crime rates.
After his visit to Jamaica, Rubio continues his tour in Guyana and Suriname.
