By Horace Palacio: A new 10% blanket tariff on all imports to the United States — including those from Belize — is set to take effect on April 5th, following a surprise announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The move has raised serious concerns within Belize’s trade and export sector, with sugar—one of the country’s largest exports to the U.S.—under close review. While sugar may remain unaffected due to existing quotas, other exports could feel the hit.

Minister of State for Finance Chris Coye confirmed that multiple government ministries met urgently to analyze the situation. “We’re taking a whole-of-government approach to understand the full scope and prepare appropriate responses,” he said.
Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is seeking bilateral dialogue with the U.S. and aligning with CARICOM to defend Belize’s trade interests.
Negotiations between affected countries and the U.S. are expected to begin soon — adding a layer of uncertainty for exporters and trade officials alike.
