By Aaron Humes: Current United Democratic Party (UDP) Leader and former Mesopotamia area representative Moses “Shyne” Barrow has issued a statement condemning the recent double murder of an innocent mother and her disabled son, Evadnie and Luke Jones, urging the government to take immediate action to address the country’s growing crime crisis.
Barrow emphasized that Belize can no longer afford to let murderers and gang leaders act with impunity, and that it was time for the government to implement measures to neutralize domestic terrorism. “We cannot continue to live in a Belize where murder is the easiest crime to get away with. We cannot continue to know who the gang leaders and members are yet allow them to act with impunity…I do not encourage the breach of anyone’s civil rights; however, we are in dire need of Bukele-esque policies that will put the civil rights of innocent mothers and law-abiding citizens before that of heartless murderers,” he elaborated.

In the statement, Barrow highlighted his past efforts to support bipartisan legislation to combat crime while serving in the House of Representatives. He encouraged the Government to consider suggestions from various stakeholders to make the recently introduced 13th Amendment to the Constitution more practical and effective: “…the 13th Amendment that was introduced recently may not be a perfect legislation, I encourage the Government to consider the suggestions of the different stakeholders to make the legislation as good as practical…” Barrow stressed the importance of empowering the security forces and judiciary with the necessary tools to arrest, prosecute, and convict domestic terrorists. He urged the government to take extreme measures to protect national security, given the severity of the threat posed by violent crime.
Barrow also emphasized the need to address the root causes of crime, including poverty and lack of opportunities. He advocated for increased funding for education, vocational training for at-risk youth, and poverty alleviation programs to prevent young people from joining gangs.
“The lines have been crossed! The Government must immediately put in place the necessary legislation to assure not another innocent mother perishes at the hands of the blood thirsty. No more impunity! Extreme threats to national security requires an extreme response!” noted Barrow.
Finally, Barrow extended his deepest sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones to violence, emphasizing the need for collective action to prevent further tragedies.
