Venezuela’s Communication and Information Minister Freddy Ñáñez on Tuesday accused US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of presenting an artificial intelligence (AI) video to create a false war story.
He said that while he could not be fully certain which tools were used, the video showed clear signs of being AI-generated.
Rubio shared the video as proof of an attack on a “drug trafficking” boat, but Venezuelan officials called it a “deepfake.”
Their technical review claimed the explosion looked like a “cartoonish animation,” with unnatural water effects, missing details, and digital “artifacts.” The presence of “UNCLASSIFIED” text and a strange watermark were also flagged as signs of manipulation.
Ñáñez said Rubio had misled President Donald Trump and was “encouraging war and trying to stain Trump’s hands with blood.”
He attached an analysis from Gemini software that judged the video “very likely” to be AI-generated.
Venezuela warned that such faked content could be used to justify sanctions or military action, stressing that deepfake videos are becoming common in propaganda and disinformation.
