By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC took a commanding lead in the 2025 Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2024-2025 Closing Championship Finals, securing a 2-0 victory over San Pedro Pirates in the first leg at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro. With goals from Krisean Lopez and Christian Sánchez, Verdes now hold a crucial advantage heading into the decisive second leg next Saturday at Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
Lopez strikes early to put Verdes ahead
From the opening whistle, Verdes showed their attacking intent, pressuring the Pirates’ defense in search of an early breakthrough. Their aggression paid off quickly when, in just the sixth minute, Lopez found the back of the net, giving Verdes a 1-0 lead and setting the tone for the match.
Despite trailing, San Pedro Pirates fought hard to respond, creating opportunities through Keydenshaay Bowen and Jaheim Mena, but Verdes’ disciplined backline held firm. As the match progressed, the Pirates sought ways to break through Verdes’ defensive structure, but they struggled to generate clear-cut chances.
At halftime, Verdes remained in control with a 1-0 advantage.
Sanchez doubles the lead in the second half
The second half resumed with San Pedro Pirates pushing for an equalizer, but Verdes continued to dictate the pace of the game. In the 52nd minute, Sánchez extended Verdes’ lead, slotting home their second goal of the night.
With a two-goal cushion, Verdes managed the remainder of the match, frustrating the Pirates while maintaining possession and controlling the tempo. San Pedro Pirates increased their intensity in the final moments, but Verdes remained resolute to ensure a clean sheet and the valuable win.
Verdes in prime position heading to second leg
With this result, Verdes FC now head into the second leg of the PLB Final in a strong position, needing only to maintain their lead or avoid a defeat by more than two goals to secure another championship title. Meanwhile, San Pedro Pirates must regroup and find a way to turn the tide as they prepare for the return fixture next week.
