Tourism chiefs are banking on a big boost to the boating industry in the Virgin Islands as the territory returns to the Miami International Boat Show this week.
The event, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world, will include a showcase of the VI’s “premier maritime and yachting offers” during a five-day run that began on Wednesday, officials said.
The annual show draws around 1,000 boats and some 100,000 people each year, according to organisers.
The BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission said local participation will focus in part on pushing the marketing slogan that the territory is “the sailing capital of the world.”
Joining forces with the BVITBFC are representatives from the VI Shipping and Maritime Authority and Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina.
“Collaboratively, they will showcase the territory’s signature blend of pristine sailing conditions, safe and well-regulated maritime environment, vibrant onshore experiences, and premium service providers,” the BVITBFC said in a statement.
As well as the territory’s official line-up, other companies exhibiting independently at the gathering include MarineMax Vacations, Waypoints Yacht Charters, The Moorings and Sunsail, Navigare Yachting and Dream Yacht Charter.
“The Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show remains one of the world’s premier boating and marine industry events, attracting thousands of international boating enthusiasts, charter clients, and industry professionals,” the BVITBFC stated.
The event also offers an opportunity to build relationships with “both trade and consumer audiences,” according to the agency.
“As a long-standing hub for yacht charters, superyacht services and marine innovation in the Caribbean, the BVI’s participation … underscores the territory’s commitment to maintaining its leadership position in the global marine tourism market,” the BVITBFC stated.
The agency added that last year’s event was a “huge success.”
“The show welcomed over 100,000 visitors and featured 1,000-plus of the most highly sought-after boating and marine products, generating big business for the recreational boating industry,” it stated.
