Dr Kenny Anthony, the long-serving parliamentary representative for Vieux Fort South, has announced he will not contest the next general election, bringing an illustrious political career to a close.
The 74-year-old former Prime Minister made the announcement Wednesday night during a Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) public meeting in Vieux Fort South, where he was the sole speaker. His speech, which lasted over 90 minutes, was introduced with the song By the Rivers of Babylon, a song Anthony said symbolised “the meditation of our hearts”.
“And so, I have come to this delicate juncture of which I speak. I have therefore decided that I will no longer offer myself to be your candidate at the next general election,” he said.
Having represented the constituency for 28 years, Anthony took the opportunity to reflect on his personal, academic and political journey. He also shared his vision for Vieux Fort’s future, urging the current government to resolve long-standing land ownership issues in the communities of Cantonement and Bruceville.
“I’m praying that this government completes what I started and make sure the people of Cantonement have the ability to own the land which they occupy,” he said, “and also that this iongovernment does not betray the people of Bruceville and make sure that the people of Bruceville finally get ownership of the land that they have occupied in Bruceville, land which has been surveyed in a preliminary way.”
Anthony, who served as prime minister for three terms, also addressed speculation surrounding his possible successors within the SLP, naming Augustus Cadet, Tresha Lionel, Danny Butcher and Kentry Frederick as individuals who have expressed interest in running.
“So far, four individuals have expressed their desire to succeed me as the next candidate of the SLP,” he said, cautioning supporters that any talk of hopefuls being endorsed by the SLP or Prime Minister Philip J Pierre was mere speculation and rumour.
He encouraged constituents to critically evaluate each prospective candidate: “Observe the various candidates, familiarise yourself with their history, personal and otherwise, hear their plans and proposals for the constituency… assess how they express their commitment to the SLP.”
Offering additional reflection on his own legacy, Anthony said, “I hope I will continue to be an example of a politician who demonstrated that place of birth and upbringing are not impediments, that what matters, are commitments, dedication, truth, love and respect.”
While Anthony confirmed he will speak again at a later date, Wednesday’s announcement signals a new chapter for the Vieux Fort South constituency.
