Another month, another double-digit jump in passenger traffic. That’s been the story in Puerto Rico for much of the post-pandemic period, with the island’s main air hub in Luis Munoz Marin International Airport showing another strong period to start the year.
In March, passenger traffic in San Juan was 1.323 million, a 13.7 percent improvement over the same period last year. That included a 13.8 percent jump in domestic traffic and a 12 perfect rise in international traffic; the latter has been a strong source of growth for Puerto Rico in recent years, thanks to new routes from carriers like Avianca and Iberia.
For the first quarter, Puerto Rico’s passenger traffic was 3.608 million, a 10.6 percent expansion over the first quarter of 2024, according to data from ASUR, which manages the airport.
It’s staggering just how well the airport has been performing — with nearly unchanged positive growth for half a decade in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico doesn’t frequently release its stayover arrival numbers (mainly because as a domestic US destination it doesn’t really have any way of inquiring of inbound travelers), but the passenger traffic growth is a good indicator of just how popular the island has become in recent years.
That has been driven by abundant, relatively cheap airlift and, for the most part, value-friendly hotel rates.
