The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) wants people in Jamaica to put smoke detectors in their homes. This is part of their plan to use technology to reduce deaths and injuries from fires.
Deputy Commissioner Sean Martin explained that these detectors give early warnings. They can also connect to smart devices like Alexa, Siri, and Google Home. If there’s a fire, your phone can alert you so you can act quickly.
“In a fire, every minute matters,” said Mr. Martin. “Installing these devices could save your life.”
He shared this advice on a recent episode of the TV programme Get the Facts, made by the Jamaica Information Service.
Smoke detectors are not very expensive, he said, and they help people escape fires by giving early warnings. Many fires happen at night while people are asleep. Smoke can actually make people sleep more deeply, but an alarm can wake them up.
Mr. Martin also said that modern smoke alarms are smart devices that do most of the maintenance themselves. A small light shows if the battery is low, if it needs cleaning, or if it should be replaced. You can also press a simple test button to check if it’s working.
People should test their smoke alarms once a month and follow the manufacturer’s instructions about battery checks and replacements.
He also explained that the main causes of home fires in Jamaica are:
- Leaving cooking unattended
- Careless use of candles
- Faulty stoves
- Electrical problems
Electrical fires are often caused by short circuits, illegal power connections, or overloaded circuits.
