The Rotary Central Science Fair
The 19th annual Dr. Bill Hrudey Science Fair was held by Rotary Central Cayman Islands on 5 April at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The event featured a record 97 registered projects, which spanned the scientific disciplines of Earth sciences, food and health, life sciences, and physics, chemistry and computer science. This year’s science fair saw participation from more than 130 students across 15 local public and private schools in the Cayman Islands, in addition to several home-schooled students, and including nine projects from schools in Cayman Brac. The ages of the students competing in the fair ranged from as young as 5, up to 17 years old. The keynote speech at the awards banquet was delivered by former Dr. Bill Hrudey Science Fair winner and present event judge, Chynna Retumban, who is a molecular biologist with Cayman Islands Health Services Authority. World Jr. BBQ League
The 3rd Annual World Jr. BBQ League National Cayman Championships were held at A. L. Thompson’s Outdoors on 5 April. The WJBL Cayman Chapter was established in 2023 in conjunction with James Myles, the founder of the nonprofit National Youth Culinary Programme, and teaches local teens how to cook Memphis-style BBQ. Currently, 25 students from five high schools across Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac are a part of the league. Champion pitmaster and WJBL founder Melissa Cookston attended the championships, and her team also hosted an in-depth bootcamp on 3 April at John Gray High School in preparation for the competition. Third place went to West Bay Grillers (Home School), second place to Cayman Classic (CHHS), and first place to Geosmokers from Clifton Hunter High School, who will progress to the WJBL Championship in Southhaven, Mississippi later this year.

Sunrise Sound Experience
IslandSoul hosted a vibrant Sunrise Sound Experience at the shoreline of the Holiday Inn Resort on 6 April. Guests gathered for an enriching morning designed to release their daily ‘DOSE’ of feel-good chemicals – dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins – leaving them energised, uplifted and inspired for the day ahead. The experience consisted of SOMA breathwork meditation to settle and focus the mind, Kundalini-inspired movements to awaken and invigorate the body, and a silent disco dance session with curated sounds by DJ Narah. There was also a closing reflection exercise, encouraging intention setting for the day, supported by the soothing sounds of affirmations and the benefits of herbal tea. Violetta from Prana4Love brought her Tibetan sound bowls and wellness expertise to guide the movement section.

Sea Salted Saga
Kennedy Gallery in West Shore Center hosted ‘Sea Salted Saga’, a one-man art exhibition by the renowned artist Saba, on 5 April. The exhibition showcased Saba’s latest works, celebrated for their bold strokes and profound themes. Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with Saba and immerse themselves in his evocative pieces. The show attracted art enthusiasts and collectors, making it a memorable evening that highlighted Grand Cayman’s vibrant art scene.

SoNoRo
The SoNoRo Chamber Music Festival is a distinguished cultural event dedicated to celebrating the artistry of chamber music, and was performed in Cayman in collaboration with Cayman Arts Festival. From 2-5 April, the festival brought together renowned classical musicians for a series of inspiring performances and educational initiatives. Musicians included violinists Nicolas Dautricourt and Alexandra Tirs, Razvan Popovici on the viola, cellist Kyril Zlotnikov, and pianists Cristian Budu and Glen Inanga. To engage audiences of all ages, each day of the festival featured a unique concert held at iconic venues across Grand Cayman, including the George Town Public Library, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, Island Primary, and Elmslie Memorial United Church.
